When Every Leaf is a Flower

So I started this back in Sept and just finished it up today. For my second colored pencil drawing in YEARS, I think I was a bit ambitious with the subject matter. I chose to do a portrait of a beautiful friend of mine and I am afraid I did not do her justice. Colored Pencil is not a friendly medium for hair I've found. I also had some trouble getting the values I wanted. Maybe I just need more practice. Either way, I photographed my drawing and edited it in Photoshop to help get the look I wanted. Bottom image is the raw drawing (Prismacolor on paper) and the top image is a mixed media piece with the colored pencil drawing and some digital painting in Photoshop.

The title is from this quote by Albert Camus: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.”

A Little Graphic Design

I realized that I almost never post any graphic design type work on here, and since I spent this past weekend laying on the couch designing this fake cupcake app and ski site for some practice, I figured I might as well post them. There are more screens for the cupcake app that show some pre-authentication details and the profile drop down menu, but I didn't include them cause they aren't too different from what is here.

Photoshop and some stock photos I bought.

Colored Pencil Practice

I was itching to do some art, but in my new tiny apartment I don't really have a ton of room for all my supplies. So when I moved in I brought a few sketchpads and my colored pencils. With one exception, I haven't used them in about 7 years, so I decided it was time to brush off the dust and get back into it. I looked at tons of great colored pencils artists, who both inspired and intimidated me and arranged my self a still life. It was only grapes sitting on a striped dish towel, but once got started, I realized I may have been too ambitious for an evening practice session, and decided to do without the towel. I remember liking colored pencils when I was younger because you could be really precise, but it turns out I have lost some of my patience with age, and they are definitely not a fast medium!

I actually did this back in September and just haven't been able to post it. I took it into work today to scan it, but the scanner was terrible and the nearest printing company wanted to charge me $25 to scan it. So I just took a photo of it with my camera. Not the best option, but oh well.

Prismacolor on paper.

A Little Art Noueveau

Wow...way to long since I last posted some art on here. I have been wanting to do something in an art nouveau style for some time now, and finally got around to it! It's certainly not as good as Mucha, but I think I am happy with it. Had quite a bit of trouble getting a decent scan of the sketch and I'm still not totally satisfied with it. Pencil on paper colored in Photoshop.

Color Block Portrait

I saw some really awesome color block type work today and decided to play around with the concept myself. Wasn't able to achieve the same look/style of the images I was inspired by, but still happy with it. Photoshop.

Self-Portrait Remix

The version I finished yesterday really wasn't sitting too well with me so I decided to redo the hair. Still not thrilled...I think it looks a little disjointed, perhaps because I used smaller brushes for the hair so it looks a little more detailed. Regardless, I prefer it much better than yesterday's version, so at least I am going in the right direction.

Shades of Mauve

Just a little practice with my tablet. Drawn and colored in Photoshop. This is totally not what I had in mind when I started, but I am pretty pleased with the results. I'm very happy with how the face turned out...but I'm not sold on the hair/BG elements. May revisit those again later and try something different.

Mistress of Herons

I really enjoyed my earlier piece Kimono (which can be seen here), so I decided to make another...even though I should have been doing work. I am even happier with the way this one turned out. A little less stylized, and some really beautiful papers. Can't wait to make this with real paper. For now, it's just a digital collage. And unfortunately, it lost a lot of details with the lower res/size.

Valkyrie Glamour Shot

This came out with an entirely different feel than I originally intended. May redo it some day. That being said, I kinda like it. Reminds me of a model's head shot or something, so I had her sign it. And yes, she does dot her I's with hearts. Colored in Photoshop.

Valkyrie - Sketches

Some sketches for a character I started a long time ago and was recently inspired to revisit. Hopefully I will get around to finishing/cleaning/coloring them! Pencil on paper.

Cloth Study

Felt the need to do a little practice...cloth and tablet! I don't normally sketch on the tablet, preferring good ole fashioned pencil, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Painted entirely in Photoshop. Don't love it as a "finished" piece, but very pleased considering how hard I normally find fabric. I used a couple reference photos (found here and here) because I am just not capable of doing realistic cloth without them.

I've been thinking about this project for awhile, and have discarded several compositions/layouts already. Inspired by traditional Japanese painting, and all of the wonderful Japanese papers. I think it turned out pretty well, but I wish I had gone in with a better idea of how I wanted the colors to work together. This is a digital collage made in Photoshop, but I'd love to make a real one. There's just something about the real 3D element (however slight) that you get with actual layered papers, not to mention the added depth of metallic papers.

Airplane Sketch

Did this sketch two weeks ago on an airplane. Just used a photo from one of the Airline magazines in the seat back pocket for reference. Lost a TON of detail in the scan...guess I learned my lesson about drawing in light blue colored pencil. Overall not too happy with this at all. Done in under an hour on regular computer paper.

Just a quick sketch I did the other night. Not loving the colored version.

Drama Llama

So I am making a scale to measure the level of drama for any given situation (inspired by the crazy drama I have been experiencing recently). It's called the drama llama scale and is measured in number of llamas. I'm still refining the details, and will post a guide to using the drama llama scale sometime in the near future (hopefully). I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of 1 llama = very little drama, while 12 llamas = end of the world. Here is the first part: the drama llama himself. Hope you enjoy it! Just a funny little thing I thought up at work.

#sundayART: Animals

No, I have not forgotten that I still have a few more #sundayART prompts to work through. Did this today in maybe an hour. It felt good to draw/sketch again and get a little dirty in the process. I'm thinking about using this as a study for a larger piece...maybe a painting. We'll see if I ever get around to it. Charcoal on paper. 11" x 14"
